About Us

Established in 2010 by Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N. Patel—the Centre for Public and Private International Law (CPIL) at Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar, was founded with the vision of advancing rigorous academic inquiry and policy-oriented research in the fields of Public International Law, Private International Law, the Law of the Sea, and related disciplines.

Originally functioning as two distinct entities, the Centre for Public International Law and the Centre for Private International Law were formally consolidated in 2020 to reflect the growing intersections between these domains in both academic study and legal practice. This unified platform now supports a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to international legal scholarship.

In response to an increasingly complex and multipolar global order, CPIL is particularly attuned to the legal narratives and challenges emerging from the Global South. Through cutting-edge research, high-impact publications, and academic training, the Centre engages critically with contemporary developments in international law. Its collaborations with leading academic and policy institutions worldwide enable sustained dialogue on evolving legal norms. The Centre remains committed to shaping global discourse and fostering capacity in the field of international law.
